The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy

With the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty, a new position in the EU was created - the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, who conducts the Union's foreign policy.

Before the Lisbon Treaty, the position was divided into two: the the High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and the Commissioner for External Relations. But the Lisbon Treaty consolidated these two positions into one, whereby one person holds the sole responsibility for the common foreign- and security policy of the EU.

Baroness Catherine Ashton, with a past as EU Trade Commissioner, was appointed the EU's first High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. She also functions as the Vice President of the European Commission.
